Info Sheet - Albinism in Tanzania

Albinism is a genetic condition leading to pale skin and hair, and low vision. It is not a disease and is not contagious. A person with albinism is neither a curse nor a ghost, but a human being. Regardless of ethnicity, a mother and father without albinism can have a child with albinism.

Many people with albinism in Tanzania face stigma and discrimination because of their appearance. Some children with albinism are bullied in school, others are abandoned by their families. Adults with albinism may struggle to earn a living as they should avoid the sun due to the risk of skin cancer. In some areas, persons with albinism have been brutally attacked, and even killed.

As a fellow human you have an important role to play in making life safer and fairer for people with albinism. Here’s how you can help:

As a fellow human you have an important role to play in making life safer and fairer for people with albinism. Here’s how you can help:

As a teacher:

  • Allow a child with albinism to sit in front of the classrooms due to low vision.

  • Support and remind a child with albinism to avoid the sun as it can lead to sunburns that may develop to skin cancer.

  • Allow a child with albinism to wear modified school uniforms that protect the skin from the sun.

  • Foster acceptance and connection amongst all pupils for all pupils.

As a NGO or Community Worker:

  • Support small or large projects that include and empower people with albinism.

As an employer:

  • Create a workplace that values inclusivity and diversity by actively recruiting and supporting people with albinism.

As a leader:

  • Speak up for all people – you’re a role model.

  • Counteract spread of false information or harmful rumors about albinism.

  • Uphold human rights to all people.

Together we can show empathy, raise awareness and ensure the voices of people with albinism are heard and respected. Everyone has a right to live in safety and dignity.
