Albinism is a genetic condition leading to pale skin and hair, and low vision. It is not a disease and is not contagious. A person with albinism is neither a curse nor a ghost, but a human being. Regardless of ethnicity, a mother and father without albinism can have a child with albinism.
Many people with albinism in Tanzania face stigma and discrimination because of their appearance. Some children with albinism are bullied in school, others are abandoned by their families. Adults with albinism may struggle to earn a living as they should avoid the sun due to the risk of skin cancer. In some areas, persons with albinism have been brutally attacked, and even killed.
